L-1 The American Civil War: An Overview
Lecturer: John Hartman
Course Synopsis: A overview of the history of the Civil War.
Biography: John Hartman is a retired instrumental music instructor from the North Bend, Oregon, School District. He received a Bachelor of Music Education in 1976 from the University of Oregon, and a Master's of Music in Instrumental Conducting in 1982, also from the University of Oregon. He is currently an adjunct instructor of Civil War History at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Oregon. Mr. Hartman is married to Gayla Johnson Hartman (UO '76). They have one son, Daniel. The Hartmans have been to ten Civil War sites since 2005.

Course Synopsis: This class is going to show how to get started with your family history research. Bring your information with you and a pencil. We will be working hands on to start you on your search.
Biography: Marcia A Rice has been doing family history research for more than 20 years. Experienced in general United States and Canadian research. Marcia has specialized research experience in Colonial New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Other areas of expertise are Ontario, the Prairie Provinces, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and California. Member of the Association of Professional Genealogist, New England Historic Genealogical Society and National Genealogical Society.
L-3 Tracing your Immigrant Ancestor
Lecturer: Kim Davis
Class Synopsis: Learn how to obtain the information needed to successfully attempt to locate your immigrant ancestor in the country of origin.
Biography: Kim A. Davis is a third generation genealogist. She began her personal pursuit of family history over thirty five years ago while residing in Seattle near a branch of the National Archives. She resided (and researched!) all over the United States prior to settling in North Bend, Oregon. Pulled reluctantly into Internet usage, she now enjoys the challenges and opportunities of Internet research. She joined the staff of the Coos Bay Family History Center eleven years ago. Kim is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists.

Lecturer: Sharon Clark
Synopsis: Sharon will demonstrate how to use familysearch.org. The three parts: original records, trees and the IGI, and the family history library catalog.
Biography: Sharon Clark was born in Chicago Illinois, and grew up in Riverside California. She graduated from Humboldt State University at Arcata California, got married and raised three children. She spent many years as a substitute teacher in the elementary schools of Coos County. She has also been full time faculty at Southwestern Oregon Community College. For the past 10 years she has worked as a contractor at Shutter Creek Correctional Institution, where she now manages a team of facilitators who teach cognitive change (behavior modification) classes to inmates there. Genealogy has been a favorite pastime for about 35 years. AV requirements: LCD projector, computer with access to familysearch portal.

L-5 Researching Your Quaker Ancestry
Lecturer: David E. Williams
Class Synopsis: This lecture will explore the Quaker movement from its inception in the British Isles to its fruition in early America. An emphasis will be placed on how to find and interpret early records from this influential religious society. To tie into the Civil War lectures a segment on Quaker involvement in the Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad will be added. Biography: My Branch of the Williams family was among the early settlers of Eastern Oregon, emigrating to La Grande in the 1870s. An interest in genealogy came from family stories told while sitting around the dinner table. As an adult, moving to the Coos Bay area to further my teaching career, led me to genealogy classes with some of our excellent local family historians, and working as a librarian in our local Family History Center.

Biography: Vee Elliott born 7 July 1944 St. Luke's Hospital, Boise, Ada, Idaho. I have wanted to live on the Oregon coast ever since I was a little kid growing up in Boise. My life path finally brought me, via California and Arizona, to North Bend in the summer of 2000. I was reading The World soon after my arrival, and there was a listing of classes being offered at SWOCC. One of the classes was Genealogy Research. I had always wanted to learn about my grandmother's family so I began taking classes and became a regular visitor at the Family History Center. The classes taught me the correct way to do research and excited my curiosity. To increase my knowledge I began volunteering as a librarian at the Family History Center in 2001.

Biography: Beverly Rice, CG(SM) is a lecturer and teacher on genealogical topic. She is the Director, American Studies for GenealogicalStudies.com and is on the board of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
