L-9 Using Land Records Lecturer: Neal Middlebrook Class Synopsis: Lecturer will cover the basics of the use of land records in the United States. Biography: Neal Middlebrook started his pursuit of family history in 1989 while working for the Bureau of Land Management in Washington DC. He moved to the Coos Bay area in 1992 with his family, and worked for the local BLM Coos Bay Office and the Oregon/Washington State Office. In March of 2004, he retired. Neal is presently serving as President of the Middlebrooks Family Association based in Georgia. His ancestors have led him to focus his research mainly in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Arkansas, and more recently in Ohio, New Mexico, California, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. He became a volunteer librarian in 2005.

L-10 Everybody's Got a Story
Lecturer: Kevin K. Mittge
Class Synopsis: This lecture will discuss and demonstrate how a family historian can find biographical information on their ancestors, even if, at first glance, there are few records available. We will discuss often overlooked information from common record sources (like the U.S. census) as well as finding and using those records that require more digging, resulting in a reasonably exhaustive search. Biography: Kevin K. Mittge is a native of Kirkland, Washington, and moved to Oregon in 2000. He obtained his Masters of Librarianship from the University of Washington and is employed as the Adult Services Librarian at the Siuslaw Public Library in Florence. Besides genealogical research and writing, he enjoys reading, hiking, traveling, and gardening.

L-12 Newspaper collections available thru the portal
Lecturer: Shirley Redmond
Class Synopsis: Exploring the newspaper collections at World Vital Records, Newspaper Archives, Footnote and Ancestry available thru the Portal at the Family History Center. These are pay sites that are available without charge at the FHC through the amazing ''Portal". Biography: Shirley Peterson Redmond is a retired registered nurse. Born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Rockford, Illinois. After retiring from hospital work she and her husband moved from Long Beach, California to the Bay area. In 1999 she saw a 1900 census with her dad as a 2 year old and she started her journey into researching her paternal grandmother's line, the only American line as the rest of her family lines were from Sweden. A basic genealogy class was offered at SWOCC taught by Marcia Rice and she was started with a great foundation. She has been a Family History Center librarian since 2003 and part of the Seminar staff since 2005

Lecturer: Kim Davis
Class Synopsis: Learn the importance of knowing the geographical and geopolitical location of your families, as well as where and how to research the information for your specific locations of interest.

L-14 Time Lines Help Family History
Lecturer: David Johnson
Class synopsis: The lecturer will discuss the importance of Timeline in family history research. Biography: David Johnson is a native Oregonian and a graduate of the University of Oregon. He taught in the Coos Bay School District for 32 years and then taught at Southwestern Oregon Community College for 4 years. David has four children and eight grand children. Family is very important to him. His second love is Family History. He just spent the whole month of July traveling East visiting relatives, cemeteries, and towns where relatives had lived. He was able to gather information by going to local libraries and court houses. Interviewing relatives is a special time and a source of information that can not be beat. Talking to my Wife's 93 year old uncle this time was wonderful.

Lecturer: Howard Crombie
Class Synopsis: Lecturer will cover the basics of starting your Native American research. Biography: Howard Crombie has lived in Coos County since he was 18 years old. He earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of Oregon and works for a tribe. He is a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Sou'West Nova Metis Council.
